What Does "Off Track" Mean?
A garage door runs along two vertical tracks on each side of the door opening that curve into horizontal tracks along the ceiling. When one or more of the door's rollers leaves its track — either popping out or the track itself bending — the door is said to be "off track." The door may appear crooked, partially open, or completely stuck.
Why Do Garage Doors Come Off Track?
🚗 Impact Damage
The most common cause — hitting the door with a vehicle. Even a slow-speed bump can knock rollers off the track or bend the track itself. This is especially common when backing out while the door is still moving.
🌀 Broken Cable
When a lift cable snaps, one side of the door loses support and the door tips sideways, causing rollers to jump the track. Always inspect cables when a door goes off track.
⚙️ Worn Rollers
Old, worn rollers — especially steel rollers that have flattened or cracked — can slip out of the track during normal operation. A gradual process that gets worse over time.
🔩 Bent or Misaligned Track
Tracks can be bent from impact, deteriorate from rust, or slowly shift out of alignment from loose mounting hardware. Even a small track deviation can cause rollers to derail.
🌡️ Extreme Temperature
Twin Falls' dramatic temperature shifts cause metal tracks to expand and contract. If tracks were installed with insufficient clearance, they can squeeze or warp, causing the door to bind and eventually jump the track.
What NOT to Do With an Off-Track Door
- ❌ Do not use the electric opener — it will make the damage worse and may burn out the motor
- ❌ Do not try to force the door open or closed manually
- ❌ Do not try to push the rollers back into the track yourself while the door is under tension
- ❌ Do not leave the door open and unsecured overnight
How We Fix an Off-Track Garage Door
- Safety assessment — We inspect the full extent of the damage, check for cable involvement, and ensure the door is stable before working on it.
- Release tension safely — All spring tension must be properly released before realigning the door.
- Track repair or replacement — Bent tracks are straightened or replaced. Loose mounting hardware is tightened and anchored.
- Roller reinstallation — All rollers are reinstalled in the track. Worn rollers are replaced.
- Cable inspection — We check and repair any associated cable damage.
- Alignment and balance — We realign both tracks, tension the springs, and test full operation.
- Root cause addressed — We identify what caused the derailment and fix it so it doesn't happen again.
